Make Do and Mend Mondays

 Today, I wanted to share a Make Do and Mend from generations ago.  I was at my mother's house yesterday and saw this quilt.  Quilts were used for warmth and comfort.  It was often made from flour sacks, or scraps, or what the quilter had on hand.  I had wanted something colorful and summery on my bed so this fit that requirement.

This was a quilt that was on my bed when I was a little girl.  Since I was feeling down and out, I decided to bring the quilt home and wrap up in it just to have a connection to my mother.  For those of you who don't know, my mother died 3 years ago and her birthday is coming up July 6th.  Needless to say, she has been on my mind lately.  Anyway, back to the quilt.  I have a queen size bed and this quilt just covers the top of the bed.  It looks as though Mama made these blocks and pieced them with equal size blocks.  What I love about this quilt is that it is not all matchy-matchy.  She used what she had and even piece the "solid" blocks using what she had on hand. 

Maybe my friend, Heidi, can tell us the name of this quilt block.  It escapes me right now.  I do know this quilt was most likely made in the late 1930s or the early 1940s.

Rearranging

Dennis helped me rearrange some things today (after he had worked all morning in the yard!) I wanted to hang this quilt. This quilt was made by a 90+ year old lady in my church and given to me when I graduated from college many years ago. She did every bit of it by hand. It is very, very special to me and I love it dearly. She is gone on to Heaven now, but her legacy lives on in her unselfish gift of love. I really like this corner. I love religious art, and am particularly fond of the Infant of Prague picture that I found in a thrift store. All this art came from a thrift store we have in town - well, except for the diploma and Dennis' awards. I think the quilt gives it a homey look. I still want to work on this corner but I think this is a good start!

PS - I failed to mention that this is the corner of a very small bedroom. It's big enough for a full size bed and that's about all that will fit in the space. It has a bathroom opening to the other side. This used to be my study until we needed another bedroom. I know I need to move the pictures for a better arrangement but I used the nails that were already hanging. I didn't want to make any new holes if I could get by without doing so.

New mini quilt finished

I have been a sewing machine today! I made the curtains and finished this small mini quilt. I used old buttons to "tie" the quilt. I zigzagged around the perimeter of the binding but I am not sure that I like that. So, I might just buy some quilt binding and redo the edges. The necklace belonged to my mom and I thought it went well with the colors. I glued 2 shank buttons on to the end of the dowel rod to give it more of a finish. All in all, I guess I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Wallhanging

I finished this little quilt today as the boys were resting. Each little block is an one inch square. I hung it up in my bathroom. It looks uneven on the bottom but I think that was the way it was hanging against the wall. In real life, it is even. I have two more to finish. In those words I have often read before, "SEW much to do, SEW little time!"
